Jewellery that is worn every day will show it. That is not damage — it is the point. But a little care keeps a piece looking like itself for a very long time.
Everyday care
Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and sunscreen, and take it off first. Most dulling is a film of cosmetics rather than wear to the metal.
Take pieces off before swimming. Chlorine and salt water both attack alloys over time, and cold water shrinks fingers more than people expect.
Store pieces apart from one another. Gold is soft, and the fastest way to scratch a polished surface is another piece of jewellery in the same box.
Cleaning at home
Warm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush will lift most of what dulls a piece. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.
Two exceptions. Pearls should never be soaked or brushed — wipe them with a slightly damp cloth and let them dry flat. Emeralds and other included stones should not go near an ultrasonic cleaner, at home or anywhere else.
Repairs and resizing
We repair what we make. Rings can usually be sized up or down, claws re-tipped, chains re-soldered and finishes brought back to new. Send us a photograph first and we will tell you honestly whether a piece is worth repairing before you post anything.
We are also happy to look at jewellery we did not make, though we will say so if it is beyond sensible economic repair.
